Turmeric vs boswellia vs glucosamine: which is right for you?
Turmeric, boswellia and glucosamine are among the most widely used joint supplement ingredients, but they’re quite different. Turmeric and boswellia are botanicals whose active compounds support joints in different ways, which is why people often take them together. Glucosamine is a nutrient that’s naturally part of cartilage itself.

FAQ
What is the best supplement for joints?
The best joint supplement depends on your needs. For botanical support, turmeric (curcumin) and boswellia are the most established options – choose a highly absorbable form such as Meriva® or Casperome®. For nutritional support for cartilage, glucosamine with vitamin C is a popular choice, as vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage.
What vitamins are good for joints and bones?
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function. Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, and the mineral manganese contributes to the normal formation of connective tissue.
Is turmeric or glucosamine better for joints?
They do different jobs. Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, is a botanical traditionally used for joint comfort, while glucosamine is a nutrient that forms part of joint cartilage. Turmeric+ provides highly absorbable Meriva® curcumin with vitamins C and D. Glucosamine+ provides 1,000mg glucosamine with vitamin C and Univestin®.
Can I take turmeric and boswellia together?
Yes. Curcumin and boswellic acids work through different pathways, so they are often taken together. The Joint Health Duo combines Turmeric+ Gold and Cool Joints+. If you take medication or are under medical supervision, check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining supplements.
How long do joint supplements take to work?
Everyone responds differently. Botanicals like curcumin take time to build up, so take your supplement every day and give it 12 weeks to properly assess whether it is working for you.
Which joint supplements are vegan?
Turmeric+, Turmeric+ Gold, Cool Joints+, Glucosamine+, Super Vitamin D+ and Vitamin D+ are all suitable for vegans. Healthy Joints & Bones contains fish and crustaceans.
Which joint supplements are soy-free?
Cool Joints+ and Turmeric+ Gold are both made with sunflower lecithin rather than soy. Turmeric+ contains soy lecithin and is not suitable for those with a soy allergy.
Are joint supplements safe to take with medication?
If you are taking any medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are under medical supervision, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking supplements. Healthy Joints & Bones and Super Vitamin D+ contain vitamin K and should not be taken with anticoagulants (blood thinners) except on a doctor's advice. Curcumin is not recommended for people with bile duct obstruction, liver disease or gallstones.
What's in a joint supplement?
Curcumin is the main active compound in turmeric, a spice with a long history of traditional use in Indian cuisine and Ayurvedic medicine. Curcumin is naturally difficult for the body to absorb, which is why we use Meriva® - a phytosome that binds curcumin to lecithin so it is absorbed in a similar way to nutrients from food. Meriva® is 30x more absorbable than standard turmeric.
Boswellia serrata is a resin from the Indian frankincense tree, used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Its active compounds, boswellic acids, are hard to absorb on their own. Casperome® combines the full range of 11 boswellic acids with sunflower lecithin and is 4x more absorbable than standard boswellia extract.
Glucosamine is a nutrient found naturally in the body's connective tissues and is a structural component of joint cartilage. The body's own production of glucosamine decreases with age. Glucosamine+ provides 1,000mg of vegan glucosamine per daily dose.
- Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones.
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function.
- Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
- Manganese contributes to the normal formation of connective tissue and the maintenance of normal bones.
Like glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and hyaluronic acid are found naturally in cartilage and connective tissue. All three feature in Healthy Joints & Bones, alongside glucosamine.
